Alachua Committee Against Brutality Endorses "Justice for Kofi" Demonstration

WHEN: Tuesday, March 16th at 11AM
WHERE: Turlington Plaza, University of Florida Campus

In response to calls for solidarity put out by University of Florida students, the Alachua Committee Against Brutality (A.C.A.B.) is issuing this public statement of endorsement for the "Justice for Kofi" demonstration planned for Tuesday, March 16th at UF's Turlington Plaza.

After reviewing the available facts regarding the shooting of Mr. Adu-Brempong by University Police officers, and particularly in light of the conflicting statements by police and accounts in the media, we support the demands listed by march organizers, including an independent investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

A.C.A.B. supports all of the organizers' demands, including the demand for a Campus Police Review Board, which parallels our own demand for a Civilian Police Review Board in the City of Gainesville.

The Alachua Committee Against Brutality was formed in response to the violent police assault that sparked the so-called "Fest riot" incident in November 2009, the resulting arrests, and the slander and lies spread in the media with regard to that incident.

In addition to seeking justice for those assaulted and arrested in that incident, we have joined our voices to the chorus in the community that was already calling for a Civilian Police Review Board in Gainesville.

The shooting of Mr. Adu-Brempong by the UPD is just one more case in a string of recent events in Gainesville that highlight the need for more accountability in all of our law enforcement agencies.
